Blue Dream Neocaridina shrimp are a popular and visually striking variety of Neocaridina shrimp, known for their vibrant blue coloration. They are relatively easy to care for, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists. Here’s a detailed guide on how to care for them:
Tank Setup
-
Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended. Larger tanks provide better stability and more space for the shrimp.
-
Substrate: Use a fine substrate such as sand or small gravel. Some aquarists prefer specialized shrimp soil that helps to buffer the water and maintain the desired pH levels, but it’s not strictly necessary.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 22-26°C (72-78°F). Keep the temperature stable and avoid drastic fluctuations.
- pH: 6.5-7.5. Blue Dream Neocaridina shrimp are adaptable but prefer slightly acidic to neutral water.
- Hardness: They thrive in moderately hard water, typically 6-12 dGH.
- TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): Maintain TDS between 150-250 ppm. Neocaridina shrimp are more tolerant of variations in TDS compared to some other shrimp species.
-
Filtration: Use a gentle filter, such as a sponge filter or a hang-on-back filter with a low flow rate. Strong currents can stress the shrimp, so ensure the filter provides gentle water movement.
-
Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal. While Blue Dream Neocaridina shrimp do not require special lighting, a well-lit tank helps in observing their color and activity.
Diet
- Food: Provide a balanced diet with high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and sinking granules. Supplement with occasional blanched vegetables such as zucchini, spinach, or carrots. Avoid overfeeding to prevent water quality issues.
