Blue Velvet Neocaridina shrimp are a beautiful and popular variety of freshwater shrimp, known for their deep blue coloration. They are relatively hardy and make a striking addition to any aquarium. Here’s a detailed guide to their care:
Tank Setup
-
Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended. Larger tanks are better for maintaining stable water conditions and providing more space.
-
Substrate: Use a fine substrate like sand or small gravel. Specialized shrimp substrates can also be used to help buffer the water and maintain the desired pH, though it’s not strictly necessary.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 22-26°C (72-78°F). Keep the temperature stable and avoid fluctuations.
- pH: 6.5-7.5. Blue Velvet Neocaridina shrimp are adaptable but prefer slightly acidic to neutral water.
- Hardness: They thrive in moderately hard water. Aim for 6-12 dGH.
- TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): Maintain TDS between 150-250 ppm. Neocaridina shrimp are relatively tolerant of TDS variations compared to other shrimp species.
-
Filtration: Use a gentle filter, such as a sponge filter or a hang-on-back filter with a low flow rate. Avoid strong currents that can stress the shrimp.
-
Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal. While Blue Velvet Neocaridina shrimp do not have specific lighting needs, good lighting helps showcase their vibrant color and makes it easier to observe their behavior.
Diet
- Food: Provide a balanced diet with high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and sinking granules. Supplement with blanched vegetables such as zucchini, spinach, or carrots. Avoid overfeeding, as excess food can lead to poor water quality.
