The Cardinal Tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) is a popular and striking freshwater fish known for its vibrant red and blue coloration. Native to the Amazon Basin in South America, Cardinal Tetras are relatively easy to care for and can make a beautiful addition to a community tank. Here’s a comprehensive guide to their care:
Tank Setup
-
Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended, though a 20-gallon tank or larger is better for stability and providing ample swimming space.
-
Substrate: Use a soft, fine substrate such as sand or small gravel. The substrate doesn’t need to be specialized, but it should be gentle on the fish.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 22-28°C (72-82°F). Maintain a stable temperature within this range.
- pH: 4.6-6.2. Cardinal Tetras prefer slightly acidic to very soft water.
- Hardness: Soft water is ideal. Aim for 1-5 dGH (degrees of general hardness).
- TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): Keep TDS low to moderate, generally between 50-150 ppm.
-
Filtration: Use a good filtration system to maintain water quality. A sponge filter or a hang-on-back filter with a gentle flow is suitable. Avoid strong currents, as Cardinal Tetras prefer calm waters.
-
Lighting: Moderate lighting works well. While Cardinal Tetras do not have specific lighting needs, subdued lighting mimics their natural habitat and helps reduce stress.
-
Decorations: Provide plenty of hiding spots and cover with plants, driftwood, and rocks. Cardinal Tetras thrive in a well-planted tank with shaded areas. They appreciate having places to retreat to.
Diet
- Food: Offer a varied diet including high-quality flake food, micro pellets, and live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. They also benefit from occasional vegetable matter such as spirulina flakes.
