The Habrosus Corydoras (Corydoras habrosus), also known as the Salt and Pepper Cory or Dwarf Cory, is a small, peaceful, bottom-dwelling fish that makes a perfect addition to nano or community aquariums. Native to slow-moving waters in Venezuela and Colombia, these tiny Corydoras are known for their charming, social behavior and ease of care. Here's a comprehensive care guide:
Tank Size and Setup
- Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is suitable for a small group of Habrosus Corydoras (5-6 individuals). A larger tank is better if you want to keep a bigger group or other fish. Their small size makes them perfect for nano tanks, but they still need space to swim and forage.
- Aquascape: Create a natural environment with live plants, driftwood, and smooth rocks. They appreciate plenty of hiding spots and shaded areas. Plants like Java moss, Anubias, and Cryptocorynes work well. Also, leave open areas for foraging.
- Substrate: A fine sand substrate is ideal, as it allows them to sift through the sand without damaging their delicate barbels. Avoid sharp or rough gravel.
- Lighting: Moderate to low lighting is best. They prefer a more subdued environment with shaded areas created by plants or décor.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: Keep the temperature between 72-79°F (22-26°C). They are adaptable to slightly lower temperatures but do best in stable, warm water.
- pH: Habrosus Corydoras thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
- Hardness: They prefer soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 2-12 dGH.
- Water Quality: Clean water is essential for these Corydoras, as they are sensitive to poor conditions. Regular water changes (20-30% weekly) and good filtration are important to maintain water quality.
Filtration and Water Flow
- Filtration: Use a gentle filtration system like a sponge filter or a small hang-on-back filter. Strong water currents should be avoided as they can overwhelm these small fish.
- Water Flow: Slow to moderate water flow is best. In their natural habitat, they are used to slow-moving waters, so avoid strong currents that may stress them.
Feeding
- Diet: Habrosus Corydoras are omnivores and primarily feed on food that sinks to the bottom. Offer them a variety of sinking pellets or wafers as a staple diet. Supplement with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp to ensure they get enough protein.
- Feeding Frequency: Feed them 1-2 times per day. Make sure they get enough food, as they may not compete well with faster-swimming fish.
- Scavenging Behavior: While they will forage for leftover food, it's important to provide them with their own diet rather than relying on scraps.
