Hillstream Loaches (often Gastromyzon spp. or Beaufortia spp.) are fascinating and unique freshwater fish known for their distinctive appearance and adaptability to fast-flowing waters. They are well-suited to specialized aquarium setups that mimic their natural riverine habitat. Here’s a detailed care guide for Hillstream Loaches:

Tank Size and Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended, as Hillstream Loaches are active fish that benefit from ample swimming space. Larger tanks are ideal for creating a more natural environment.
  • Aquascape: Mimic their natural habitat with a tank setup that includes plenty of rocks, driftwood, and strong water flow. Hillstream Loaches thrive in tanks with a rocky substrate and areas where they can find crevices to hide.
  • Substrate: Use a substrate of smooth gravel or sand. Ensure that the substrate is clean and does not have sharp edges that could injure the loaches.
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Lighting should not promote excessive algae growth, but it should support any live plants if present.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: Hillstream Loaches prefer cooler water temperatures between 68-75°F (20-24°C). They are suited to cooler water and can tolerate slightly lower temperatures compared to many tropical fish.
  • pH: They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
  • Hardness: They prefer soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 4-8 dGH.
  • Water Quality: Maintain excellent water quality with regular water changes (20-30% weekly). Ensure ammonia and nitrite levels are at 0 ppm and keep nitrates below 20 ppm. Use a high-quality water conditioner to treat tap water before adding it to the tank.

Filtration and Water Flow

  • Filtration: Use a filtration system that provides both mechanical and biological filtration. A canister filter or a strong hang-on-back (HOB) filter is recommended.
  • Water Flow: Strong water flow is essential for Hillstream Loaches. They are adapted to fast-moving waters and require good water circulation to thrive. Ensure the filter output creates a current that mimics their natural river environment.

Feeding

  • Diet: Hillstream Loaches are primarily algae eaters but also consume detritus and biofilm. Offer a varied diet including high-quality algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables like zucchini and spinach.
  • Supplemental Feeding: Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, or bloodworms to provide additional nutrition.
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed them once or twice a day. Ensure that all food items are appropriate for their size and avoid overfeeding, which can lead to water quality issues.
