Yohiki Medaka (also known as Japanese Ricefish), is a variety of the Medaka Ricefish (Oryzias latipes), known for its striking appearance and hardiness. These small fish are popular in the aquarium hobby due to their unique colors, ease of care, and adaptability to a wide range of conditions. Here’s a comprehensive care guide for Yohiki Medaka:
Tank Size and Setup
- Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended for a small group. However, a larger tank (20 gallons or more) is preferable if you plan to keep a larger colony or mixed species.
- Aquascape: Provide a well-planted tank with floating plants, such as duckweed or water lettuce, which they enjoy. Open swimming space should also be available. Using fine-leaved plants like java moss or spawning mops will encourage breeding.
- Substrate: Use sand or fine gravel substrate. Medaka are not particularly demanding about substrate type, but a natural look helps mimic their native habitat.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal. Yohiki Medaka are not too demanding regarding lighting, but brighter light helps highlight their colors.
- Cover and Decor: Include decorations like rocks, driftwood, and plants to provide hiding spots. Floating plants can help diffuse light and make the fish feel more secure.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: They are highly adaptable and can tolerate a range from 60-78°F (16-26°C). However, maintaining the temperature between 68-75°F (20-24°C) is ideal.
- pH: Yohiki Medaka prefer neutral to slightly alkaline water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 8.0.
- Hardness: They are tolerant of soft to hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-15 dGH.
- Water Quality: Regular water changes are important, though Medaka are tolerant of less-than-perfect conditions. Perform 20-30% water changes weekly to maintain optimal health.
Filtration and Water Flow
- Filtration: A sponge filter or gentle hang-on-back filter is suitable, as it provides both mechanical and biological filtration. Ensure the filter does not create too strong a current, as Yohiki Medaka prefer calm waters.
- Water Flow: They thrive in calm water conditions, so ensure the flow is gentle. If using a filter with adjustable flow, set it to the lowest setting.
Feeding
- Diet: Yohiki Medaka are omnivorous and not picky eaters. They will readily accept high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.
- Variety: A varied diet helps maintain vibrant colors and overall health. Include both protein sources and plant-based foods.
- Feeding Frequency: Feed them once or twice daily, offering only as much as they can consume in a few minutes to prevent overfeeding and water quality issues.
