Kuhli Loach (Pangio kuhlii), also known as the Kuhli Loach or the Coolie Loach, is a small, eel-like fish native to Southeast Asia. They are popular in aquariums for their unique appearance and peaceful nature. Here’s a detailed care guide for Kuhli Loaches:
Tank Size and Setup
- Tank Size: A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended. While they are small fish, they appreciate a spacious environment with plenty of hiding spots.
- Aquascape: Create a tank setup with plenty of hiding spots using driftwood, rocks, and live plants. Kuhli Loaches are nocturnal and prefer a tank with many areas where they can hide during the day.
- Substrate: A soft, fine substrate like sand or smooth gravel is ideal. Avoid sharp substrates that could damage their sensitive undersides.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Since Kuhli Loaches are primarily active at night, the lighting should support plant growth but doesn’t need to be overly intense.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: Kuhli Loaches prefer water temperatures between 75-82°F (24-28°C). Use a reliable heater to maintain a stable temperature.
- pH: They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
- Hardness: They prefer soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 4-12 dGH.
- Water Quality: Maintain excellent water quality with regular water changes (20-30% weekly). Ensure ammonia and nitrite levels are at 0 ppm and keep nitrates below 20 ppm. Use a high-quality water conditioner to treat tap water before adding it to the tank.
Filtration and Water Flow
- Filtration: Use a filtration system that provides both mechanical and biological filtration. A sponge filter or a gentle canister filter works well.
- Water Flow: Kuhli Loaches prefer slow to moderate water flow. Ensure the filtration does not create strong currents that could stress the fish.
Feeding
- Diet: Kuhli Loaches are omnivorous and will accept a variety of foods. Offer high-quality sinking pellets or wafers as their staple diet. Supplement with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp.
- Variety: Providing a varied diet ensures they receive all necessary nutrients and helps maintain their health and coloration.
- Feeding Frequency: Feed them once or twice a day. Offer only as much food as they can consume within a few minutes to avoid overfeeding and maintain water quality.
