Red Fancy Caridina shrimp are a vibrant and beautiful type of freshwater shrimp that can add a splash of color to your aquarium. Proper care is essential to ensure they thrive and remain healthy. Here’s a detailed guide on how to care for Red Fancy Caridina shrimp:
Tank Setup:
- Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended, but a larger tank can provide a more stable environment and more space for the shrimp to explore.
- Water Conditions: They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water conditions, with a pH range of 5.0-5.7 The ideal temperature range is 68-74°F (20-23°C). Stability is key, so avoid drastic changes in water conditions.
- Filtration: Use a gentle filter to avoid strong currents, which can stress the shrimp. Sponge filters or filters with adjustable flow rates work well. Ensure the filter intake is covered to prevent shrimp from getting sucked in.
Tank Environment:
- Substrate: A fine substrate, like sand or a specialized shrimp substrate, is best. Shrimp often forage on the substrate and a fine texture is less likely to harm their delicate legs.
- Decor: Include plenty of hiding spots and surfaces for biofilm to grow. Plants (like Java moss or moss balls), driftwood, and rocks are excellent additions. These provide shelter and grazing areas.
- Lighting: Standard lighting is sufficient. Bright lights are not necessary, and subdued lighting is often preferred as it mimics their natural habitat.
Diet:
- Food Type: Red Fancy Caridina shrimp are omnivores. Provide a varied diet including high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach. They also benefit from occasional live or frozen foods like daphnia or micro worms.
- Feeding Frequency: Feed small amounts 2-3 times a week. Make sure they eat all the food within a few minutes to avoid water quality issues.
