Red Galaxy Caridina shrimp are a stunning variety known for their vibrant colors and unique patterns. Proper care is crucial to keep them healthy and thriving in your aquarium. Here’s a detailed guide on how to care for Red Galaxy Caridina shrimp:
Tank Setup:
- Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended. A larger tank provides more stable conditions and ample space for the shrimp to thrive.
- Water Conditions: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 5.0-5.7 The temperature should be kept between 68-74°F (20-23°C). Consistency is key to their well-being, so avoid sudden changes in water parameters.
- Filtration: Use a gentle filter to prevent strong currents, which can stress the shrimp. Sponge filters or filters with adjustable flow rates are ideal. Ensure the filter intake is covered to prevent shrimp from being sucked in.
Tank Environment:
- Substrate: A fine substrate such as sand or a specialized shrimp substrate is best. Shrimp often forage on the substrate, so a smooth texture is preferable to avoid damaging their delicate legs.
- Decor: Provide plenty of hiding spots and surfaces for biofilm to grow. Use live plants (like Java moss or moss balls), driftwood, and rocks. These create natural habitats and grazing areas.
- Lighting: Regular lighting is sufficient. Bright lights are not necessary, and subdued lighting is often preferred to mimic their natural environment.
Diet:
- Food Type: Red Galaxy Caridina shrimp are omnivores. Feed them a varied diet including high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach. They also enjoy occasional live or frozen foods such as daphnia or micro worms.
- Feeding Frequency: Feed small amounts 2-3 times a week. Make sure they consume all the food within a few minutes to avoid excess waste in the tank.
