Red Pinto Caridina shrimp are a beautiful and popular variety of freshwater shrimp known for their striking red coloration and unique patterning. Here’s a guide to caring for them:
Tank Setup:
- Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended, but larger tanks are preferable for maintaining stable water conditions and providing ample space.
- Water Conditions: They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 5.0-5.7). Temperature should be kept between 68-74°F (20-23°C). Stable water parameters are crucial for their health.
- Filtration: Use a gentle filter that doesn’t create strong currents, as high water flow can stress the shrimp. Sponge filters are a good option for this purpose.
Tank Environment:
- Substrate: A fine substrate, like sand or a specialized shrimp substrate, is ideal. Shrimp often forage on the substrate, so it should be easy on their delicate legs.
- Decor: Provide plenty of hiding spots with plants, moss (like Java moss), and driftwood. This creates a natural habitat and places for shrimp to molt and feel secure.
- Lighting: Regular lighting is fine. Avoid extremely bright lights, as shrimp prefer subdued lighting conditions.
Diet:
- Food Type: Offer a varied diet that includes high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables (such as zucchini or spinach), and occasional live or frozen foods like daphnia or micro worms.
- Feeding Frequency: Feed them small amounts 2-3 times a week, ensuring they consume all the food within a short period to prevent water quality issues.
