The Three Line Corydoras (Corydoras trilineatus), also known as the Three-Stripe Cory or Leopard Cory, is a small, peaceful, bottom-dwelling fish. It is often confused with the False Julii Cory, but it has distinctive black lines running along its body and a pattern of spots, making it stand out in a community aquarium. These fish are easy to care for, hardy, and perfect for both beginner and experienced aquarists. Here’s a detailed care guide:
Tank Size and Setup
- Tank Size: A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended for a small group of Three Line Corydoras. Larger tanks are preferable if you're keeping a larger school or other fish in the tank.
- Aquascape: Three Line Corydoras thrive in a natural-looking environment with soft, sandy substrate. Fine sand is the best choice, as it allows them to dig without damaging their delicate barbels (whiskers). Include driftwood, smooth rocks, and plants like Anubias or Java ferns for hiding spots.
- Substrate: Sand or smooth gravel is essential for their bottom-dwelling lifestyle. Rough or sharp substrates can injure their barbels.
- Plants: They do well in well-planted tanks, which provide shaded areas and extra cover. Plants like Amazon Swords, Cryptocorynes, and Java moss are great choices.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable. Corydoras prefer dimly lit areas, so having shaded spots created by plants or décor helps them feel secure.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: Maintain a temperature between 72-79°F (22-26°C). Stable temperatures are important for their overall health and well-being.
- pH: Three Line Corydoras prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
- Hardness: They thrive in soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 2-12 dGH.
- Water Quality: Corydoras are sensitive to poor water quality, so regular water changes (20-30% weekly) and good filtration are crucial. They require clean water to prevent issues like bacterial infections.
Filtration and Water Flow
- Filtration: A good-quality filter, such as a sponge filter or canister filter, is essential to maintain clean water. Make sure the filtration system doesn't create strong currents.
- Water Flow: Corydoras prefer slow to moderate water flow. Avoid strong currents as they can tire out these bottom-dwellers.
Feeding
- Diet: Three Line Corydoras are omnivores and feed primarily at the bottom of the tank. Provide them with sinking foods like high-quality sinking pellets, wafers, and algae-based foods. They also enjoy live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, which provide extra protein.
- Feeding Frequency: Feed 1-2 times per day, offering only what they can consume in a few minutes. Be sure to include a variety of foods to keep their diet balanced.
- Note: While they will scavenge for food, Corydoras should not be relied on solely as tank cleaners. Be sure to provide them with appropriate sinking food.
