Tigris Sulawesi Shrimp (Caridina cf. babaulti), known for its vibrant colors and striking patterns, is a freshwater shrimp species native to the Sulawesi region of Indonesia. They are relatively rare and require specific care to thrive in an aquarium setting. Here’s a detailed guide to keeping Tigris Sulawesi Shrimp:

Tank Size and Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended for a small group of Tigris Sulawesi Shrimp. Larger tanks, such as 20 gallons or more, provide better stability in water parameters and more space for the shrimp to explore.
  • Aquascape: Mimic their natural habitat with a setup that includes rocks, driftwood, and caves. These structures provide hiding spots and areas for exploration. Smooth lava rocks and ceramic decorations are ideal. Ensure there are both open spaces and covered areas.
  • Substrate: Use a dark, fine-grained substrate such as sand or fine gravel. Avoid substrates with sharp edges that could injure the shrimp.
  • Plants: While not essential, hardy, low-light plants like Java fern, Anubias, or moss can enhance the tank’s appearance and provide additional surfaces for biofilm growth. Floating plants can offer shaded areas.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: Maintain a warm water temperature between 78-86°F (25-30°C). Use a reliable heater to ensure a stable temperature.
  • pH: Tigris Sulawesi Shrimp prefer alkaline water with a pH range of 7.8 to 8.4. Consistent pH levels are crucial for their health and well-being.
  • Hardness: They thrive in hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 6-8 dGH and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 4-6 dKH. Adequate mineral content is essential for their exoskeleton and overall health.
  • Water Quality: These shrimp are sensitive to water quality. Perform regular water changes of 10-20% weekly to maintain optimal conditions. Use dechlorinated water that matches the tank’s temperature and parameters. Adding specialized shrimp mineral supplements or liquid rock salt can help maintain appropriate hardness and mineral levels.

Filtration and Water Flow

  • Filtration: Use a sponge filter or a gentle hang-on-back filter that provides effective filtration without creating strong currents. Sponge filters are beneficial as they offer additional surface area for biofilm growth, which the shrimp graze on.
  • Water Flow: Tigris Sulawesi Shrimp prefer gentle water flow. Avoid strong currents that can stress them. Use tank decorations to help diffuse water flow if needed.

Feeding

  • Diet: In their natural habitat, Tigris Sulawesi Shrimp feed on biofilm, algae, and microorganisms. In captivity, provide high-quality shrimp pellets or wafers, and supplement with blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini. They also benefit from occasional live or frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or powdered spirulina.
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed small amounts 2-3 times a week. Ensure food is consumed within a few hours to avoid water quality issues. Remove any uneaten food promptly to prevent decay.
